BRYAN — Colby Harwell on Thursday fired an impressive 6-under-par 66 to lead the 85-player field in the qualifying round of the State Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship at Traditions Club.
Harwell, who is from Robinson, will hold the No. 1 seed headed into the match play bracket. During the qualifying round, Harwell poured in a total of 7 birdies against only one bogey.
“Everything was working today,” Harwell said. “My putting really stood out.”
Harwell will tee it up Friday at 7:30 a.m. to initiate the Round of 32. Nathaniel James, Washington & Lee University Alum, finished a shot behind Harwell. James shot a 5-under 67 to earn the No. 2 seed.
Bob Kearney of Houston grabbed the third seed with a 4-under 68.
The cut for the qualifying round was a score of 5-over 77. The final three match play seeds were determined by a seven-man playoff that took two holes to complete.
The first round of match play begins Friday at 7:30 a.m., followed by the Round of 16, which starts at 1 p.m.
