Amarillo – Anna Schultz of Rockwall leads after the first round of the Women's Senior Stroke Play Championship hosted at Amarillo Country Club.  Schultz carded a one-over par 72 to lead by four over Carolyn Creekmore.  Schultz is the 2014 Senior Stroke Play Champion, a two-time winner of the Women’s Four-Ball Championship and a member of the Texas Golf Hall of Fame.  Even with green speeds approaching 13 feet, her steady round featured 15 pars and two birdies offset by a lone bogey on the 5,291 yard layout.  Carol Turnage from Anna, TX is in third place after a seven-over par 78.

Three of the five players who have pledged to play 100 Holes of Women's Competition in support of the Breaking 100 program also competed.  Karen Northcutt (The Woodlands) shot an 83, Chris Meadows (Dallas) shot 89 and Waco’s Nannette Wheelis shot a 96.

In 1966 and 1967, Amarillo Country Club hosted the Amarillo Ladies Open, and LPGA event which was won by Texas and World Golf Hall of Fame members Kathy Whitworth and Sandra Haynie respectively.  The club also previously hosted the 1979 WTGA State Amateur Championship which was won by Martha Lang.

The second round will begin tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m.  The field will be broken into three flights following tomorrow’s round.  An Overall Champion will be crowned following Tuesday’s final round along with a Super Senior (65 and older) and a Super Super Senior (71 and older) Champion.  Click here for complete tournament information.
