Lane and Nguyen Capture 14 & Under Texas State Junior Titles

HORSESHOE BAY – Gaven Lane of Argyle began the final round of the Boys 14 & Under Texas State Junior Championship with a three-shot advantage. He carded an even-par 72 on Thursday to post 3-under par overall and win the championship by three strokes. Katy’s Lauren Nguyen won wire-to-wire as well. She birdied her final hole to finish at 1-under overall to capture the Girls 14 & Under Texas State Junior Championship.

Lane, 13, seemed to ignore any pressure throughout his opening nine. The rising seventh grader at Argyle Middle School birdied the par-3 second, par-5 third and par-4 sixth to turn at 3-under 33. His impressive front side gave him a five-shot cushion with nine holes to play.

“I had a little pressure at the beginning, but I started off good and played really well on the front,” said Lane, in his first year playing competitive junior golf

The back nine was a much different story for Lane. He struggled down the stretch bogeying three of his final five holes to card 3-over 39 and post 72. Despite his closing loop, Lane’s lead was enough to clinch the title by two shots.

“It means a lot and feels great to win,” Lane said.

Evan Vo of Austin finished solo second overall at a 36-hole total of 1-under-par 143. Jack Beauchamp of Westlake, Seth Bearden of Crowell, Sebastian Moss of Pearland, Jacob Cole of Tyler, Shaheen Momin of Sugarland and Austin’s Zach Kingsland tied for third place overall at 1-over-par 145.

Nguyen, the Girls 14 & Under leader after Round 1, bogeyed the par-4 10th hole to begin her final round and found herself 5-over par through her opening 11 holes. Nguyen’s lead was gone, but her will and patience proved steady. She followed with birdies on the par-5 third, par-4 fourth and par-5 fifth to quickly regain position atop the leaderboard. The Seven Lakes High School freshman closed with a birdie on the par-4 ninth to shoot 1-over 73 and win by five strokes.

“This is my first Legends win and I am really excited about it,” Nguyen said. “My goal is to play for a D-1 college and potentially go pro.”

Ally Black of Austin finished runner-up after carding a two-day total of 4-over 148. Prosper’s Haili Moore rounded out this year’s Girls 14 & Under top-3 after a final round even-par 72 to finish at 6-over 150.
