Jay Reynolds, the 2015 South Texas Player of the Year, and his father started out hot with five birdies on their front nine. The father-son team was also able to finish strong going 4-under in their last four holes.
Two teams are just one-shot off the lead at 8-under-par. Frisco natives Grant and Lance Martin who happen to be members at Stonebriar were able to shoot 64 at their home course. Steven and Andy Williams of College Station put together a total of 10 birdies to also shoot 64 in their opening round
There are two teams tied for the lead in the Hogan Flight. Both Jeff and Walker White and Randy Mattingley and Trey Rowe finished the first round at net 8-under.
The Nelson Flight is led by Clay and Connor Keene who carded an impressive 12-under-par 60. Derek and Eddie Bell are one stroke behind after a solid 11-under first round.
Paul and Martin Meredith are leading the Crenshaw Flight after shooting a net 8-under-par in round one. Mike and Chip Block are tied with Andre and Adam Villarrial one shot behind at 7-under.
The Kite Flight is led by Bob and Grayson West after the duo finished at a net 10-under-par total for round one. One shot behind the leaders are both father-son teams of Tyler and Robert Cloud and Christian and Corey Gillum.
The Championship Division consists of 40 teams with the lowest combined handicap indexes and will play four-ball stroke play the first two rounds. After 36 holes, the low 20 teams (and ties) continue on in the Championship Flight and will play combined score (individual stroke play using both players scores) in the final round. The three-day total is the team's score for the championship.
Teams not making the 36-hole cut in the Championship Flight will compete in the President’s Flight and play another round of four-ball stroke play. The format for all other flights is 54-hole net four-ball stroke play.
The Westin Stonebriar Hotel & Golf Club Fazio course is hosting the Texas Father-Son for the second time in the tournament’s 38-year history. Tom Fazio designed the 18-hole layout which showcases dramatic landforms, subtly contoured greens and is bordered by native grass and masterful bunkering.
The second round of the Texas Father-Son will start tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. For more information, click here.
